Tomorrow, May 20, the Gateway State Trail bridge spanning I-35E will close permanently for work to prepare for its upcoming removal. Trail users will be able to cross I-35E using the new route that the Gateway State Trail follows, which is now on the new Arlington Avenue bridge.

The I-35E Cayuga construction project crews will be closing the Gateway State Trail at approximately 7 a.m. Friday, April 25. The trail needs to close for area excavation as part of the construction project, and is anticipated to remain closed through the duration of the project. The detour that was implemented last year will be posted again for this closure; trail users will be detoured to L’Orient Street, Maryland Avenue, Jackson Street and Cayuga Street.

Also, the Gateway Trail bridge spanning I-35E is tentatively planned to be removed over the weekend of May 16. The new Arlington Avenue bridge is currently scheduled to open in advance on May 11, with the new section of the trail in place and available for users.

Combine your love of biking and hiking the Trail and nature watching. Join the new Gateway Trail Bluebird Recovery Group to help check houses along the trail from Pine Point Park to Jamaca Ave.

We are looking for people who would enjoy weekly monitoring of a set of bluebird houses for the spring and summer months. Bird houses, training and materials will be provided. Because this is a commitment of weekly monitoring there will be a system of support when members go on vacation or need to miss their monitoring times.

See the Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota website here for more information. You are welcome to attend their Spring Expo Saturday , April 12. See the sign up on their web page. To join this project contact Carolyn Baird at baird.carolynbaird@gmail.com

The DNR has borrowed tracking equipment and tracked the trail for skiing on January 14th. They also plowed the trail for walking south of Jamaca.

We have had several inquiries about why the Gateway Trail has not been groomed yet this year. Upon inquiry, the DNR reports that "...we have three of four groomers that have mechanical failure. Two of the three likely have blown engines and will require major repairs and will likely be out of commission for awhile (one of those is the one used on the Gateway). Until we get them fixed it will likely not be groomed and has been noted on our website as well." We are working to find an alternative option to get the trail groomed, and will continue to keep you updated on this issue.

Activities near the Gateway State Trail have wrapped up, and the trail is now open, with no additional trail closures currently anticipated for this fall, or over the winter.

Construction activities are still ongoing near the Gateway State Trail, and the trail will need to remain closed between Cayuga St. and L'Orient St. until the work is completed, for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. The trail is currently anticipated to be open by approximately November 27. We will update our website as we receive updates from the DNR. Thank you for respecting the trail closure during this time of construction.

The start date of the closure of the Gateway State Trail between L’Orient Street and Cayuga Street has been rescheduled and is now anticipated to begin Friday, Oct. 25, rather than Monday. The closure date was moved up to help facilitate some work on pipes in the area as early as possible, before additional colder/freezing temperatures occur. The closure is still anticipated to be in place for approximately one week.

Here's an article recently published in the Star-Tribune, a nice counterpoint to much of what dominates today's headlines!
