    Starting on June 10, a minor portion of the bike trail will be detoured onto the horse trail just west of the Highway 36 intersection. Please be aware that this detour will be gravel so take the time to slow down.

    The DNR now has the funding to complete the trail, including all of the bridge work, due to Parks and Trails Legacy Amendment funding provided by the 2013 state Legislature. The Parks and Trails Fund receives a portion of the state sales tax revenue and may only be spent to support parks and trails of regional or statewide significance. Read the entire article here.

    Thanks to all the trail users who stopped by on National Trails Day. The weather was great in the morning hours. We passed out about 150 granola bars, and many gallons of lemonade. Over 80 people took the time to fill out our trail survey which should help the DNR assess how trail users see the trail.

    Current GBCTA members should look for their Spring-Summer edition of the "Through The Gateway" newsletter. It is being mailed this week. In it you will find a DNR update, some interesting articles, and some colorful pictures. The electronic version of the newsletter is now available to members here.

    From March through June of 2013, major construction will be occurring along Highway 36 near the Gateway State Trail. There will be minimal impact to the trail, but it may be closed intermittently. Signs will be placed on the trail notifying users of upcoming closures.

    The Cayuga trailhead located near downtown St. Paul will be reconfigured and the trail extended to University Avenue as a result of a project by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. This project will replace the current Maryland Avenue bridge which runs over I-35E and improve the on- and off- ramps in the area. This project is planned to begin in the Spring of 2013 and continue through 2015. Learn more about this project here

    This project is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2013 and be largely completed by the Fall of 2013. The aim of the project is to create a safer flow of traffic for cars seeking to cross Hwy 36 from side roads (Hilton Trail, Demontreville Trail, Highlands Trail). It will involve a bridge being built over the Gateway Trail at Hwy 36. Learn more about this project here.

    The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Washington County combined resources along with a $1000 contribution from the Gateway Trail Association to purchase the old Zephyr Line railroad last year.

    Time Line For Conversion
    • Track and rail removal has been completed. The trail will not, however, be available for use until it is black-topped sometime in the future.
    • Spring 2013. Paving the portion of the trail from downtown Stillwater to the Brown’s Creek Park and Nature Preserve at Neal Avenue, as well as construction of a new bridge over Brown’s Creek at the Oak Glen Golf Course and rehabilitation of an existing bridge over state Highway 95. Further development of the trail, including a proposed bridge over Manning Avenue, will depend on funding availability. The public is asked to remain off the trail corridor during all phases of trail development to ensure safety. The DNR will not be maintaining the trail for use during this construction period.
