Trail

Many Uses, One Trail
  • For the first 9 miles, the trail consists of a single 10-foot wide paved trail that is well suited to bicycling, in-line skating, walking and jogging.
  • The paved trail then narrows to 8 feet and it is joined by a separate limestone trail.
  • Although primarily designed for horseback riding, carriage driving and cross-country skiing, this unpaved trail is not closed to other uses.
  •  Unauthorized motorized vehicles are not permitted anywhere on the trail.
  • The Gateway Trail stretches across level ground and is accessible to people with disabilities and the elderly.

Trail Passes Required for Horse Traffic and Skiers

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds horse riders to buy their Horse Trail Pass.  The pass costs $21 for the calendar year purchased, and is required on horse trails within state parks, state forests, state
trails, and state recreation areas for anyone 16 years of age and older. Cost for a daily pass is $5.

Conservation Officers may periodically check riders for permits.

Cross Country Skiers are required to purchase a ski pass. You must sign your ski pass and carry it with you when skiing. Your ski pass fee helps support Minnesota's cross-country ski trail system. Ski Pass Rates: daily $5, seasonal $15.

DNR rules require a Special Use Permit for significantly large group activities (for example >30 walkers or bikers). Permits may be obtained by contacting the DNR at (651) 259-7176.
Trail Tips
  • Keep to the right side of the trail. Alert other trail users, especially horses, when passing. Use a phrase such as, "On your left", some distance before you meet horses.
  • Respect the rights of other trail users.
  • Yield to slower moving traffic.
  • Keep the trail clean; pack out your litter.
  • Stay on the trail.
  • Don’t trespass on adjacent property.
  • Drug and alcohol use is prohibited.
  • Camping and fires are not allowed.
  • Pets must be leashed and under control.
